Pregnancy and 4D-5D ultrasound: when to have it
Ultrasound follows your baby’s growth. A 4D-5D scan shows your baby’s face in three dimensions.
Ultrasound uses sound waves, not radiation, so it is safe for mother and baby. Doctors use it to confirm the pregnancy, date it, follow the baby’s growth and check the amniotic fluid and placenta.
When to have a scan
- First trimester: confirm the pregnancy and the due date
- About 18–22 weeks: a detailed check of the baby’s organs
- About 26–32 weeks: 4D-5D shows the baby’s face most clearly
- Third trimester: follow the baby’s weight and position
Good to know
A 4D-5D scan is a lovely way to see your baby, but it does not replace antenatal care and your scheduled check-ups. If you have bleeding, strong abdominal pain or your baby moves less, see a doctor straight away.
This is general information and does not replace a doctor’s advice. If you have symptoms, please come in.
