Annual health check-up: what is checked and how to prepare
Diabetes, high cholesterol and high blood pressure often cause no symptoms at first. A yearly check finds them early.
Diabetes, high cholesterol, high blood pressure and fatty liver often cause no symptoms in the early stages, so many people only find out once the disease has progressed. A yearly check-up finds problems early, when they are easier to treat.
What is checked
- Weight, blood pressure and a physical examination by the doctor
- Blood sugar and cholesterol
- Liver and kidney function
- Complete blood count (CBC) and urine test
- Abdominal ultrasound and cancer screening, depending on age and risk
Before you come
- Fast for 8–10 hours before blood sugar and cholesterol tests (water is fine)
- Take your regular medicines unless the doctor told you to stop
- Bring previous results and a list of the medicines you take
When your results are ready, the doctor goes through each value with you and explains whether you need treatment or further tests.
This is general information and does not replace a doctor’s advice. If you have symptoms, please come in.
